State Competitions
State Solo Competition
- Students who wish to enter the state level competition for the National ASTA solo competition should first read the national Solo Competition Guidelines and Responsibilities for audition repertoire and general procedure. The first round of this audition will consist of the applicant sending a CD or cassette tape recording of their material, a completed application form, 2 COPIES of proof of birth date (birth certificate, passport, license, etc.), and a
non-refundable entry fee of $75 USD made payable to TSTA to:

The POSTMARK DEADLINE is September 1, 2008. Applications with postmarks after the Sept. 1 deadline will not be considered. Dr. Baldwin and the string faculty at UTK will serve as the committee to certify the performer to the - Semi-final round, which will be held at Middle Tennessee State University School of Music, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on Saturday, September 20, 2008. The semi-finalists will be notified by September 15, 2008. If the applicant is certified to move onto the state finals, he/she will be expected to appear before the adjudication panel at the appointed time.
- CERTIFICATION: The adjudication panel will certify at least two (2) finalists, one (1) from the junior category and one (1) from the senior category. If there is a consensus, there is the possibility that more could be certified. We are not limited to any specific number. Please refer to the rules listed on the application for definitions regarding junior and senior, as well as to the specific literature that is required.

Alternative Styles Awards
This event seeks to identify, celebrate, and encourage young practitioners of alternative string styles, such as (but not limited to) all folk music traditions, jazz, fusion, and rock music.
Merle J. Isaac Composition ContestThe purpose of ASTA's Merle J. Isaac Composition contest is to encourage the composition, publication, and performance of music of quality for the benefit of school orchestra programs.
National Orchestra FestivalThe 2008 National Orchestra Festival will be held in conjunction with the ASTA National Conference in Albuquerque February 27 - March 1, 2008. The schedule of performances is located at the above link.
National High School Honors OrchestraThe National High School Honors Orchestra (NHSHO) is a performing group of about 120 competitively selected high school musicians who assemble biennially to perform at the ASTA national conference.
CodaBows for America Community OutreachCodaBow International, Ltd., donates approximately $5,000 worth of full-size CodaBow Aspire bows annually to deserving schools and studios. Violin, viola, and cello bows can be awarded. Applications will be accepted from ASTA members in good standing on behalf of schools or studios that outline the particular worthiness, promise, and need of their program.
National Solo CompetitionThe National Solo Competition will occur March 18th through 21st, 2009, in conjunction with the ASTA National Conference in Atlanta. The competition is open to ASTA members or current students of ASTA members. Instrumental categories are Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Classical Guitar, and Harp.
Potter Violin Outreach ProgramDalton Potter, owner of Potter' s Violins in Bethesda, Maryland, donates six Rudolf Doetsch instruments annually to students in need. Three instruments-violins, violas, or cellos of any size-are awarded each round. Application deadlines are April 1 and October 1 each year. Applications are accepted on behalf of students (elementary through high school), from ASTA members who outline their particular worthiness and promise as string students.
